Laser Hair Removal Procedure
What is Laser Hair Reduction?
Laser hair reduction is the process in which a special laser is used for reducing unwanted hair. A hair removal laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light which is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles. During this procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to heat up the pigment and significantly impede the follicle’s ability to grow hair. This process also treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously.
What type of laser Hair Reduction does The Sullivan Centre use?
The Sullivan Centre is the only centre in the state of Ohio using the state-of-the-art LightSheer Duet diode laser system. The LightSheer Duet is able to treat numerous hair follicles simultaneously by using high speed energy to achieve permanent hair reduction in far less time with much more comfort. Therefore, LightSheer Duet is appropriate for treating even the largest areas of the body both quickly and effectively. This laser has a special contact cooling hand piece which protects and cools the upper layer of skin before, during and after each laser pulse while directing the laser energy to the hair root.
Is this a permanent form of hair reduction?
Laser Hair Reduction is the most permanent form of hair reduction available today. Patients should understand that there may be a need for additional follow-up treatments in the future.
What can I expect for this treatment?
The length of a laser treatment may last from a few minutes to more than an hour depending on the size of the treatment area. It is important to know that hairs in the active (anagen) growth phase are most affected by the laser. Because not all hair is in the angen phase at the same time, more than one treatment will be necessary to achieve your desired results. The treatment may cause some discomfort. Topical anesthetic can be used to numb the area and make the process more tolerable. Because the Duet boasts a larger hand piece and higher energy no topical anesthetic is needed. The appearance of the treated area will vary from patient to patient depending on the skin type and the areas treated. Side effects, if any, are generally minimal. They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle which are a clinical indication that the follicle has responded to the treatment. Most patients can resume normal activity immediately.
Who should perform my Laser Hair Reduction treatment?
Laser hair reduction should be performed by a Cosmetic Therapist or a Nurse under the direction of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Facial Plastic Surgeon, or Dermatologist. A consultation should be held before your treatment to ensure that the treatment provider is aware of any medical history. This will be the opportunity for you to ask questions about the procedure, the fees and the side effects.
